"Nature centers have a unique opportunity and urgent

communities through education." (B.Townsend)

Pacifica in the Siskiyous

Some History

Pacifica The Siskiyou Mountains are an amazing place. Ridge upon rugged, blue ridge of largely pre-Tertiary rock folded and refolded and intruded by granites and serpentines provide for an exciting diversity of plants--perhaps more than in any other one place in the country.

Pacifica, itself, provides a wide variety of habitats: chaparral, oak savannah, mixed broadleaf/coniferous forest, riparian areas, and a cold air drainage area supporting more montane plants. This diversity draws, as well, over 130 species of birds (see the list and add your own sightings by choosing the "birds" button) and over 200 species of plants (choose the plants button to see a list and some pictures).

The Bureau of Land Management has 120 acres adjacent to this property which they will "share" with Pacifica for the purpose of interpretive trails. This area will add at least one additional "habitat" (old-growth conifer forest) to those already present at Pacifica and will bring the total acreage to be included in the Nature Center to over 200 (and the total available to Pacifica's visitors: 540).

The Vision

Using methods entertaining as well as educational, interactive as well as factual, Pacifica will enhance, for visitors young and old, appreciation of the beauties and wonders of the Siskiyous and of Nature, in general. Greater understanding fosters not only added enjoyment but also an increase in respect and concern.

Current Update

Thanks to help from some wonderful volunteers and some energetic AmeriCorps helpers, the Nature Center has made good progress on the trail system. Two miles through woods, meadow and chaparral have now been forged. If you want to do more than just walk, there are two 10-stop self-guided tours available: 1) You're Alone in the Woods… and 2) Start Your Own Nature Journal.

In addition, the Nature Center held an exciting "Take Flight with Pacifica" day in May 2001, including a wonderful array of children's activities and speakers on everything from bats to butterflies, birds to geology. Everyone had a great time.
